Cafe's Star Product - Maybelline 24 Hr Color Tattoo Eyeshadow in 'Fierce and Tangy' Review and Swatches

October 04, 2012

This is the story of a love triangle. The story is set around 2 weeks back in time when I went in quest of Kryolan products to the only store in town that would probably have them. But all they had were some palettes (which I did not want) and the TV Paintstick (which I already have). I was just about to leave when the SA dragged me to the Maybelline counter and kept forward all the Color Tattoo eyeshadows. I vaguely remembered hearing about them in the distant past but since they were cream-based, I had already made up my mind not to buy them. There was this one color, though, that attracted and distracted me - and that was the 'Fierce and Tangy'!. By this time, somehow, the SA had managed to swatch all of them on my hand. I do not remember the other shades as I was all eyes just for the 'Fierce and Tangy'. It so happened that the mind that was obsessed  with Kryolan while going in,  now came out of the store with the 'Fierce and Tangy' haunting it. I did not buy it that day....

Four days back, on a Sunday, I went to the nearby mall, this time for the Baby Lips lip balm. I glanced again and decided to buy this time, no not Baby Lips but the 'Fierce and Tangy' Color Tattoo!!! How far does this story go? Does it end in tragedy or was it a happy ending? Want to find out? Keep reading...

My Experience

As much as I love dark lipsticks, but when it comes to eyes, I prefer light, neutral, wearable eyeshadows; nothing dramatic.

Okay, now how does a name like 'fierce and tangy' sound to you? All orangey, right? Well, yes, that is right too. But what I see is a very wearable peach-based orange. It has very fine golden shimmer too but it is not all noticeable. The color is opaque and buildable though it would look better with less layers. One swipe gives a very natural, wearable look with just a dash of color; covers the pigmentation on my eyelids; and also brightens my entire face; and this is exactly how I plan to use it. More swipes will give you a 'bright as sunshine' look.

It is super blendable. If you are a beginner and yet want to look like a pro, then this is the product for you. My advice is - ditch the brush and use your fingers instead. It will help to warm up the shadow and also spread better. The consistency of the Color Tattoo is of a creamy gel that sets into a dry, matte finish. Though it sets dry, it does not feel dry at all. There is one problem here, though. You need to blend the shadow before it sets dry or else you may just end up with a patchy application, especially if you are building layers. So once again, use your fingers!

This product is so versatile! You can use this as an eyeshadow base for your powder eyeshadows, as an all-over lid color, as eyeliner, or even blush! Performance-wise, it is excellent. I applied it lightly on moisturised skin (with no primer or foundation beneath) for a dash of color and had this on for 8 hours; and there was no budging, no fading, no creasing, and no smudging at all!!! It just sat there on my lids like second skin, so natural and very, very impressive. The free brush seems to be of decent quality to me. See the swatches below. A single swipe when properly blended on my dusky skin just brightens my look, sits very pretty and nice and not at all dramatic.

Swatches in Natural Light (L-R) - 1 Swipe, 2 Swipes

You will need a heavy-duty makeup remover to remove it properly. Since I use an oil-based makeup remover (to know which one, read here), I have not faced any problem getting it off. I would also advise you to do the same since they can be a little difficult to remove otherwise.

Swatches Taken With Flash (L-R) - 1 Swipe, 2 Swipes

  • This particular shade is a beauty
  • Super blendable, but do blend before it sets
  • Super-impressive staying power
  • Waterproof
  • Good quantity for the price
  • No budging, no fading, no creasing, and no smudging at all
  • Opaque and buildable color
  • Excellent texture and finish
  • Sets into a dry finish but does not feel drying at all
  • Versatile - use as eyeshadow base, all-over lid color, eyeliner, or even blush

  • No ingredient list
  • Performs better with less layers
  • Needs to be blended before it sets dry or else you may just end up with a patchy application
  • Requires heavy-duty makeup remover to remove it properly, preferably an oil-based makeup remover
  • Only a few neutral shades. Maybelline needs to come up with more neutrals in the future.

Overall Impression

I always use matte powder eyeshadows and never wear cream shadows. I also detest shimmer and shine on lips and eyes. However, these feel and look just like powder eyeshadows on the eyes and the shimmer is just namesake. You will love them. True to their name, they are tattoos!!! As you can see, this story has a very happy ending.
